Rehabilitation Unit for Sexual Function after Surgery
Unfortunately, it is not uncommon that many treatments for certain tumors may have an impact on the sexual sphere. In this clinic we don’t believe that this is a “price” to be paid to cure that cancer and that one has to give up to have a good quality of life. We have protocols of rehabilitation of sexual function that we have applied to our patients successfully for a long time and that are based primarily, firstly to prevent the occurrence of these adverse effects by performing the most advanced treatments and secondly apply those techniques that allow the patient to recover a satisfying sex life as soon as possible.
I was told that I can lose potency after surgery or radiotherapy. Is that true?Yes. Certain surgeries and radiation treatments as those peformed for prostate cancer, bladder cancer or rectal cancer can cause as an adverse effect a loss of the quality of the erection (erectile dysfunction).
Is it very frequent?Yes. The temporary or permanent loss of erection can be an adeverse effect in more than 50% of treated men.
Can it be prevented or treated?Yes. With proper treatment and a rehabilitation program for sexual function, it is possible that men treated to be cured of these tumors, again recover a satisfactory sexual life.
What is the basis of this program of rehabilitation and treatment of sexual life you offer? It is based on three principles. First of all, study and improve sexual function before starting the cancer treatment. Then, perform those advanced surgical techniques that have less impact on erections and, following the surgery, start a program of active treatment that allows men to recover as son as posisible normal erections.
What surgical techniques preserve sex life better? For both radical prostatectomy (surgical treatment for prostate cancer) and radical cystectomy (surgery for infiltrating bladder cancers), we offer and perform laparoscopic techniques with preservation of neurovascular bundles (which are the bundles where the nerves for erection are found), that preserve a good sexual function in a significant number of cases.
I have received treatment at another center. Can I still follow a sex life recovery program with you?Yes, in most cases, patients will benefit from the rehabilitation program and post-surgical treatment.
What is the basis for the treatment and rehabilitation after surgery? It is a comprehensive and personalized program to recover sexual function, including drug treatment, psychology and/or sex counseling, expert advice for the couple’s relationship and close monitoring of progress to adapt the plan to be followed by the patient according to recovery.
After surgery, is it possible to recover erections?Yes, in most cases erections can be recovered again. The treatment program to be followed is personalized and depends on the individual situation.
