Laparoscopy
Laparoscopic surgery of the kidney, ureter, upper urinary tract and adrenal gland
All these organs are grouped under the name of retroperitoneal organs. Laparoscopy has become the gold standard for performing many of the surgeries of these organs.
What is a nephrectomy? It is a surgery in which the kidney is removed either completely (radical nephrectomy for a tumor or simple nephrectomy for benign diseases) or partialy (partial nephrectomy). The type of surgery performed depends on the type of disease in the kidney and can usually be performed laparoscopically.
What is a nephroureterectomy? It is the removal of the kidney and the ureter, which is the tube through which urine from the kidney reaches the bladder. Usually this surgery is performed in cases of tumours of the ureter or renal pelvis (the part of the kidney where urine produced is collected) and can usually be performed laparoscopically.
What is a pyeloplasty? It is a surgery performed to fix a malformation called ureteropelvic junction stenosis, in which there is a narrowing in the draining of urine from the kidney that may cause pain and suffering in the kidney that, in advanced cases, might cause it to stop working permanently. Laparoscopy is the approach of choice for this technique due to its excellent results with a very low complication rate.
What is the adrenal gland? What does surgery on it consist of?The adrenal gland is a gland placed in contact with the upper pole of each kidney and whose function is the production of different hormones, the most important being steroids and catecholamines. In the latter group, hormones like adrenaline and noradrenaline are included. In certain cases it is necessary to remove the gland, mainly due to changes in hormone production or due to adrenal tumours. In most cases, this surgery (called adrenalectomy) may be performed by laparoscopy.
Can other laparoscopic surgeries on these organs be performed?Yes, here we only have explained the most frequent. The type of surgery is personalized in every case and should be adapted to the severity of the problem, the health status of the patient and his expectations, so information on the technique, results, and possible approaches should be adapted to every case.
